Question 1

Can a Notary Public do a Power of Attorney?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A Notary Public at Charsley Harrison can attest Powers of Attorney when they are required for use abroad. This authenticates your document, ensuring it is legally recognised overseas.

Question 2

Can a Notary Public notarise a Will?

Accepted Answer

A Notary Public can notarise a Will where you are able to provide the Grant of Probate, though it's usually only needed if the Will is to be used abroad — for example, where assets or property are located overseas. Our Wills and Probate services can guide you further.

Question 3

Can a Notary Public provide online services?

Accepted Answer

Some notarial services can be handled online, such as certifying degree certificates or Companies House documents. However, you should check with the recipient whether they will accept electronically notarised documents, as some do not. Most documents require you to sign in front of the Notary in person. Our Notary, Tajinder Rai, is registered for digital signatures with a Qualified Electronic Signature, meaning an e-Apostille can also be obtained where she has e-notarised your document. Contact our Notary team to confirm whether your case can be completed remotely.

Question 4

Can a Notary Public translate documents?

Accepted Answer

Notaries don't usually translate documents themselves, but they can certify translations prepared by a qualified professional. This is often required for certified translations of visas, contracts, or official certificates. Tajinder is able to assist you in getting your documents translated and has contacts who can help with over 120 languages.

Question 5

Can a Notary Public be a witness?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A Notary Public at Charsley Harrison can act as an official witness to your signature. Their seal carries international recognition, which a standard witness cannot provide.

Question 6

Can a Notary Public witness a signature?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. One of the most common tasks for a Notary Public is to witness signatures on contracts, Powers of Attorney, and other important legal documents. This is often known as 'attestation'.

Question 7

Why do you need a Notary Public?

Accepted Answer

You need a Notary Public when documents will be used outside of England and Wales. Notaries ensure your identity is verified and that your paperwork is legally recognised abroad — whether for property transactions, civil or criminal proceedings, business contracts, personal certificates, or many other types of documents.

Question 8

Where can I get a document notarised for free in the UK?

Accepted Answer

In the UK, notarisation is a regulated service and is not usually available free of charge. Unlike a solicitor, only a Notary Public can notarise documents for international use. At Charsley Harrison, we provide clear and upfront quotes before starting any work.

Question 9

How much does a Notary Public charge to certify a document?

Accepted Answer

The cost of notarisation depends on the type of document. Simple certifications may start from £100, while more complex matters cost more. Tajinder, our specialist Notary, provides transparent quotes so you know exactly what to expect.

Question 10

What's the difference between a Notary Public and a Solicitor?

Accepted Answer

A solicitor advises on UK law and domestic legal matters. A Notary Public specialises in authenticating documents for international use, ensuring they are accepted abroad by foreign authorities. If your documents are going overseas, you'll need a Notary rather than a solicitor.
